THINGS WE’RE DOINGScholarship Opportunities:Ivorian Hope will be hosting its second annual Ms./Mr. Hope Scholarship Competition for March 2010. For more details and an application, please see the scholarship page. Clothes Donations:Ivorian Hope currently has 750 pounds of donated clothing in storage and is raising funds to ship the clothes to Africa in time for Christmas. $1.00 ships 1 pound of clothing. Home Reconstruction:Ivorian Hope has facilitated meetings between the United Nations and heads of rural villages in Ivory Coast. The UN has committed to building homes throughout those villages using the help of local war victims. Ivorian Hope is collecting funds to send construction materials necessary to clear and clean roads so that construction can begin. These materials include: machetes, gloves, boots, and sharpening kits. To donate funds for this cause please see: How You Can Help? Micro-Enterprise ProjectsIvorian Hope is taking the initiative to help villages become more economically independent and developed. We have interviewed 300 women from rural villages with individual business projects. These women are widows, former teachers, or women left to fend for themselves after the war. The have developed business plans. Ivorian Hope will select projects with the most developed business plans. Traveling to the Africa:Ivorian Hope plans an annual 10-day trip for volunteers to go to Ivory Coast, Africa. Volunteers have a chance to travel throughout rural villages, interview war victims and make reports identifying the needs of displaced victims, attend cultural events to observe and learn about the African culture, distribute clothing and food to local victims, travel to the capital of Ivory Coast, Abidjan, to observe the differences between the developed cities and rural villages. The cost of each volunteer including airfare, food, and hotel stay is approximately $3,000. Fundraising opportunities for each volunteer will be available for volunteers to raise money for the trip. The next trip will be in August 2009: Ivorian Hope Charity is planning the annual Hope Service Trip to Cote d'Ivoire,Africa for the board of directors and volunteers. When:The trip will be for three weeks beginning in Mid-August 2009 . Where: The trip will take place throughout rural villages in Cote d'Ivoire, Africa and major cities. Why: Volunteers will travel to Cote d'Ivoire, Africa to gain first-hand experience working with international organizations; providing humanitarian assistance; contacting local political officials; visiting universities, medical centers, and shelters; learning about the Ivorian culture and living conditions; gain international work experience; learn french; make a difference in the world. What: Volunteers will investigate the needs of displaced war victims living in major cities and rural villages; develop programs to rebuild homes and road-clearing projects; meet with village leaders and political figures; rally the aid of larger international organizations and government officials; interact with locals and gain awareness of the Ivorian situation; travel to tourist sites and learn about the Ivorian culture; implement micro-credit and cooperative programs in villages; and more. Cost: The approximate cost of air fare, traveler's medical insurance, meals, transportation, housing and hotel stays is $2700. Volunteers will also be given opportunities to fund-raise the trip costs within the organization. Who: The program is available to all Ivorian Hope Charity volunteers, high school or college/univerisity students over the age of 18, or people interested in learning about and making a difference in Cote d'Ivoire, Africa. Scholarship Opportunities for StudentsAlthough Ivorian Hope provides its own scholarship program, we are also co-sponsors for the Esperanza Fund scholarship program. This program gives scholarships to high school seniors regardless of ethnicity or immigration status. The deadline is March 27th, 2009. To fill out an application please visit www.esperanzafund.org. I Hope Walkathon, Part of the I Hope CampaignIvorian Hope will be holding a walking marathon at Towson University to raise money for the organization's exempt purposes and other local organizations. This event will help us build connections with the Towson community as well as local causes by having participants raise money for their own hope and dreams for a better community by giving 10% of raised funds to to their designated organizations. The I Hope Walkathon will take place on Saturday, March 7, 2009 from 9:30am to 2pm. The I Hope Campaign hopes to encourage others to not just get involved with Ivorian Hope's mission but also inspire others to act towards their hopes for change in the world, so please join us! Hope Scholarship CompetitionIvorian Hope hosted it's first annual Hope Scholarship Competition on Saturday, February 21, 2009. This year's scholarship recipients were Charity Gachenge from Northwest high school in Montgomery County Maryland and Rodrigo Castro. First place for the scholarship prize was $1500. There were five contestants in the competition chosen to compete in the final round all representing high schools in Montgomery County. Contestants had to fill out an application along with resume to be considered for entry into the competition. Once selected, contestants performed personal talents, held personal interviews, and did self-presentations to the audience. Next year's scholarship will be open to all Maryland high school seniors as well as a college division of the scholarship that will be added.
